Why you should not sweat the big stuff in 2022

Stick to the basics and control what you are able to, say Mark Raban and David Peel

With troublesome headlines surrounding Covid, volatile used car markets and many more factors besides, there are reasons why some could be concerned with the approach of Christmas. Mark Raban, CEO of Lookers, says that it is easy to get swept up in all this but he says that teams should cut out the noise where possible.

“My tip for 2022 is control the controllables and stick to the basics,” he says. “We are at an inflection point in the industry, we have increased costs, we have electric vehicles, we have disruptors entering the used car market, we have agency agreements – there is a huge amount of noise but let’s just stick to what we can control. If we control the controllables then we have got a really great future ahead of us.”

David Peel, managing director of Pentagon agrees, adding: “Don’t stress about what you can’t affect – we all need a focus on what we can affect and that is going to be key in 2022.”

However, he maintains that there should be an awareness that things are not as they were, saying: “Don’t depend on yesterday’s experience for tomorrow’s success – the world has changed.”
